How to help your friend who is a NICU mom.
These tips also work for any new mom!
NICU moms feel helpless, and stressed. The birth of their baby, or babies, too early is a huge trauma for the NICU mom.
You may find your friend literally reeling from the situation. She has gone home after delivery without her newborn infant. Very few situations in motherhood feel worse than this one.
So how can you help her, really help her?
Here are 6 ways to offer support for your friend who has a baby in the NICU:
Grocery shop for her and prepare some meals for the week ahead.
Do some laundry for her – wash, dry, and fold clothes. She can put them away later.
Schedule a time to babysit her other kids while she is at hospital several days a week.
Offer to babysit at least one evening each week so she and her husband or partner can have a date night.
Take her out to lunch and just talk. Encourage her to express her feelings about her baby’s NICU stay, and how it feels to be the mom of a gragile, or sick child. Ask her about her feelings of helplessness.
Put fresh flowers in a vase for her in her house, at least weekly.
Doing these things for your friend will mean so much to her.
Allow her to lean on you during this time and encourage her to express her feelings and frustrations. She needs your listening ear and understanding.
